BIOGRAPHY

Professor Giovanna Cantarella is a specialist in Otolaryngology and Phoniatrics at Casa di Cura La Madonnina, where she specializes, in particular but not limited to, laryngeal disorders at all ages. After graduating in Medicine and Surgery in 1979 from the University of Naples Federico II and specializing in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Pathology at the University of Milan in 1984, she also completed specializations in Maxillofacial Surgery (1990) and Phoniatrics (1994) at the same university. She passed the ECFMG and VQE exams in the United States for medical degree recognition. During her training and scientific collaboration, Professor Cantarella also had the opportunity to visit important international institutions such as the Hermann Hospital in Houston, the M.D. Oncology Institute in Milan, and the University of Milan. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, St. Vincent Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He also established international collaborations with clinicians and bioengineers to promote research in voice disorders, including with the aid of artificial intelligence, developing original techniques for the treatment of vocal cord paralysis. He worked for several years at the Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan, as Medical Director of the Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery Unit and Associate Professor at the University of Milan. During his career at the Policlinico in Milan, he established a laryngology and phonosurgery service and promoted the development of a new service dedicated to neonatal and pediatric laryngology, aimed at the treatment of congenital and acquired obstructive airway diseases in neonates and children. From 2019 to 2025, she was also the director of the School of Specialization in Audiology and Phoniatrics. A member of prestigious national and international scientific societies, she is the author of 141 publications in international journals, approximately 80 in national journals, books, and approximately 400 papers at national and international conferences. Her H-Index is 35 (November 2025), with total citations: 4,642 (Google Scholar), of which 3,275 since 2020. Since 2022, she has been among the top 2% of most cited researchers in the world (World's Top 2% Scientists).
