What is Physiatry?

Physiatry, or Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, is a branch of medicine dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disabilities resulting from various diseases or injuries involving the musculoskeletal, neurological, and, in some cases, cardiopulmonary systems. A physiatrist is a specialist who restores impaired bodily functions, improving patients' quality of life through a multidisciplinary approach.
A physiatrist does not simply treat the disease but looks at the patient as a whole, developing personalized treatment plans that include physical therapies (such as focal shockwave therapy), therapeutic exercises, ultrasound-guided injections, and advanced rehabilitation techniques. Their goal is to reduce pain, improve functionality, and promote patient independence, whether they are amateur athletes with acute injuries, people with chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, or seniors wishing to maintain their mobility.

Why book a physical therapy appointment?

Booking a physical therapy appointment is essential for an accurate assessment of your physical and functional status, especially in the presence of persistent pain, limited movement, or after an injury. The physical therapist can identify the cause of the problem and propose the most appropriate treatment, reducing the risk of chronicity and accelerating recovery. Furthermore, the appointment is an opportunity to receive personalized advice on how to prevent recurrences and maintain a healthy level of physical activity safely.

When should you book a physical therapy appointment?

It's advisable to book a physical therapy appointment in several circumstances:
  • For persistent musculoskeletal pain that doesn't improve with standard treatments (ice, NSAIDs, rest, etc.);
  • After a sports injury or trauma, to assess the extent of the damage and plan a rehabilitation program;
  • When suffering from chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, or other conditions that limit mobility;
  • When seeking to regain function after orthopedic surgery
  • To prevent injuries, especially in active individuals or athletes, through targeted and corrective exercise programs.
